Gwinnett reliever Jenkins receives late-night promotion from Braves

-

Right-hander Tyrell Jenkins is the latest touted pitching prospect to get his shot with the Braves.

The Braves recalled Jenkins from Triple-A Gwinnett before they faced the Reds Thursday afternoon at Turner Field. Jenkins will pitch out of the bullpen for the Braves after the organization moved him to a reliever role for the first time in his career earlier this month.

In five relief appearances with Gwinnett, Jenkins was 2-0 with a 2.70 ERA, six strikeouts and five walks over 131/3 innings. He did not pitch in the Braves’ 7-2 victory over the Reds on Thursday.

“Being a starter, you are at your own pace,” Jenkins said. “As a bullpen guy, you don’t know when you are going to get the call. Just being ready and not piddling around the strike zone and go after guys and get quick outs.”

To make room for Jenkins on the roster, the Braves optioned right-hander Casey Kelly to Gwinnett.

Jenkins, 23, posted a 2.91 ERA in 14 games (nine starts) for Gwinnett with 45 strikeouts and 24 walks in 65 innings. He was the Braves’ organizational pitcher of the year in 2015 after he had a 3.19 ERA in 25 games between Gwinnett and Double-A Mississippi.

Jenkins said he got the call from the Braves at midnight Wednesday.

“I was kind of stunned,” he said. “I called my mom and told her I was going to Atlanta, and after that we didn’t really talk for the next five minutes, we were just bawling on the phone. It was pretty special.”

Report: Colquitt football coach facing suspension

According to a report in the Moultrie Observer, Colquitt County football coach Rush Propst faces a one-year suspension from the Georgia Professional Standards Commission.

Propst head-butted a Colquitt County player on the sideline during the Packers’ semifinal victory against Mill Creek in December. That incident appears to be the reason for the suspension, according to the report.

The Observer reported that Propst received a letter from the standards commission informing him of the suspension. The newspaper report said that Propst appealed the decision, but that Propst could not comment on the case.

KSU investigating softball allegations

Kennesaw State is investigating allegations against its softball coach for alleged interactions with team members.

An anonymous letter writer made the charges. The letter was mailed to Rod Bossert, assistant vice president for human resources at Kennesaw State, and Marion Fedrick, vice chancellor for human resources for the University System of Georgia. Both offices confirmed that they received the letter.

A Kennesaw State spokeswoman confirmed the allegations were being investigated through an email, but declined to provide any more information other than the school’s Title IX office is handling the investigation.
