I-10 reopens east of Tucson after fatal collision near Vail

Police closed all eastbound lanes of Interstate 10 near Vail for almost three hours on Christmas Eve after a fatal crash involving a semitruck and a van.

The crash was reported at 6:43 p.m. near Vail, which is 30 minutes southeast of Tucson, according to the Arizona Department of Public Safety.

As of Tuesday night, DPS had not said how many people were killed in the collision.

The eastbound lanes of I-10 were closed near the junction with State Route 83.

DPS had advised drivers to turn around and return to Tucson, while the Arizona Department of Transporta­tion posted a detour route on its Twitter account that would take drivers through Sonoita to Whetstone and back north to Interstate 10, adding at least an hour to drivers’ trips.

The Maricopa County Sheriff ’s Office is investigat­ing after a 61year-old man who was shot outside a home in Litchfield Park, where he was visiting family for the holidays, a Sheriff ’s Office spokesman said.

Deputies found the man around 9:30 p.m. on Christmas Eve as they responded to a call near Sierra Hermosa Drive, said Sgt. Joaquin Enriquez, a Sheriff ’s Office spokesman.

Enriquez said the man was treated and hospitaliz­ed in critical condition from a single gunshot wound.

The man’s condition had improved by Christmas Day. He is expected to survive.
