- By Josh Richert Sports Editor

Winnsboro went on a 20-point streak in the first quarter, and Texas High never climbed out of the hole.

The Lady Tigers cut their deficit to 10 points early in the fourth quarter, but the Lady Raiders nailed four 3-pointers in the final period and held off THS for a 72-54 win Tuesday at Tiger Center.

Winnsboro shot 50 percent (25 of 50) from the field and drained 11 3-pointers.

Texas High shot 39 percent (22 of 57) and held advantages in rebounding and turnovers. The Tigers won the battle on the glass, 39-28.

“We were there in the game in the fourth quarter,” Lady Tigers coach Shonda Wilson said. “Winnsboro is a very disciplined team, and they shot the ball very well. We out-rebounded them, which was a positive. Playing them in a man (defense) helped us get back into the game, but they got hot late to finish it out.

“It’s hard to guard when the 3-ball is steadily falling.”

Down 18 points at halftime, Texas High (2-2) closed the gap in the third quarter with a 10-0 rally to make it 47-34. Following a 5-point run

by the Raiders, the Tigers answered with a 6-point streak to make it 52-40 at the end of three quarters.

Kiasyia Morrison’s fast-break layup for Texas High made it a 10-point game, but Navy Briggs drained back-to-back 3s for Winnsboro to make it 58-42 with 6:34 left in the game,

Briggs sunk six 3-pointers and finished with a game-high 18 points. Sage Brown had a trio of 3s and 13 points for the Raiders (8-2), and Darcie Mabry scored 10 points.

Morrison led the Tigers with 12 points, Amiyah Rone scored 10, Kerrighan Dunn had nine and Antonia Porter eight. Unique McBride pulled down seven rebounds to lead THS on the glass, and Porter had six rebounds.

Winnsboro had just three turnovers in the the first half against a half-court trap by the Tigers, who switched to man-to-man in the second half, when the Raiders had 13 turnovers to finish with 16

“We’ve been working on cutting down our turnovers, and we did do that today,” Wilson said. “We’ve still got some work to do. We’re going to examine this loss, learn from it and try to get better.”

Texas High had half of its 14 turnovers in the first quarter but cleaned up ball protection the rest of the way.

Texas High won the junior varsity game, 48-45. Amari Morrison led the Tigers with 15 points, Ashlyn Stiger added 10 points and Cashlin Gooden had eight.
