Twin City Sports, USSSA get ready for third annual showcase

- By Earl Gill

Seizing the moment when opportunity presents itself is essential to being successful.

Twin City Sports and the United States Sports Specialty Association will hold their 3rd annual softball showcase this weekend.

“We started this showcase in 2016 and we’ve been successful with it since,” Twin City Sports director Sandy Dickson said. “We’d love to have everyone come out and support the event. I think with everyone’s help, we can show our visitors the best of Texarkana.”

The showcase will host 28 colleges and universities, ranging from the junior college level to Division I squads.

“We have colleges from all over the country coming to check out the softball athletes from around the area,” Dickson said. “Last year, 54 scholarships were awarded to participants after the showcase.”

Unlike most camps and combines, this showcase is team oriented and will also guarantee each team a minimum of five games to play throughout the weekend. This year, TCS and USSSA will use various fields in the Texarkana area to host the over 60 teams that have already registered. The games will be played at Hobo Jungle, Grady T. Wallace Park and William Karrh Park on Saturday, beginning at 8 a.m.

“Robbie Robertson and Tyler Richard have both

helped tremendously this year with the showcase,” Sandy Dickson said. “Both mayors in Texarkana have also been instrumental with putting this event together. They’ve helped me a ton and made my job as director easier.”

TCS is hoping that all of the athletes in this area will take full advantage of this opportunity to be seen by college coaches, in a setting where scholarship offers will be presented.

“Most of the kids coming from out of town are chasing scholarships offers,” Dickson said. “A scholarship itself could be worth anywhere from $10,000 to $100,000. This is a way for these athletes to have an opportunity to continue their education. A lot of people can’t afford to go to college, so this is the route that they have to take.”
