Miller County tax assessor to retire March 30
Long-time servant Mary Stuart has spent 22 years in position
Miller County Tax Assessor Mary Stuart has announced her retirement effective March 30.
Stuart, who served as tax assessor for 22 years, made her announcement Monday night during the Quorum Court meeting.
“I thank the Quorum Court and have enjoyed it,” Stuart told the justices of the peace. “Old age is coming up and don’t say anything about it,” she said jokingly.
Stuart has worked a total of 38 years in the tax assessor’s office. She never drew an opponent as tax assessor, an elected position.
The Quorum Court approved a resolution appointing Claudia Walker as the tax assessor to fill Stuart’s unexpired term.
Walker has worked in the tax assessor’s office since
1999.
“She is a great worker and can carry on and keep it running smoothly,” Stuart said.
A reception will honor Stuart from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday on the third floor of the Miller County Courthouse.
Among other business, Justice of the Peace Jimmy Cowart suggested installing signs at historical sites in the county.
Cowart suggested installing the signs periodically.
The justices of the peace suggested appointing a committee to study the proposal and estimated costs.
“Maybe this will help us from losing our history,” Cowart said.
Judge Roy John McNatt said he will appoint a committee and Cowart will serve as the chairman.
