White Christmas?

There is a slight chance that dream could come true

-

A White Christmas is a rare event here in the Twin Cities. It happened a couple of years ago when a light, brief dusting fell, but snow during the holidays remains uncommon in our area. We are more likely to see unseasonably warm weather than the powder fall.

Which is just fine with some folks—maybe most folks. Still, there are a number of locals who get snow fever around Christmas and wish we here in Texarkana would have more of the experience common in colder climes.

And who can blame them, really. Every Christmas card, Currier and Ives print and Hallmark holiday movie features glorious snow. How many Christmas carols are there with snow in them? We hear how much fun it is to climb into a sleigh and go “dashing through the snow” singing “let it snow. let it snow, let it snow” all over our “winter wonderland” “where the treetops glisten, and children listen” for those “sleigh bells in the snow.”

Yes, snow is linked forever with the holidays. And so the longing.

Well, this year those who wish for a White Christmas may—just may—get their wish.

Forecasters at NBC’s KXAN in Austin say there is a possibility of light snow on Christmas Day as the radar shows a narrow belt of snow going right through Texarkana.

Back-to-back Arctic cold fronts are the reasons. They are coming this weekend and could bring the coldest temperatures we have seen in a long time. And that could translate to snow late Christmas Eve through the day itself.

Now, don’t get your hopes—of fears—raised up too high. The forecast is based on computer models and there is no guarantee. The cold fronts could shift course and the snow might pass us completely by.

So there is no need to rush to the store and empty the shelves of bread, milk and toilet paper just yet.

But you can dream a little, if you are so inclined.
