Charles Dwayne Reed “Coach Reed”

Matthew 25:23 “Well Done, Good and Faithful Servant!”

-

Charles Dwayne Reed went to be with the Lord early in the morning on March 12, 2017 in San Diego, California while visiting family. He was 76 years old. He was the son of Edmond and Ruth Reed of Mount Pleasant, Texas. He is survived by the love of his life, his wife of fifty-five years, Evelyn Reed, his son Chuck Reed of San Diego, California and his daughter Tonya Taylor of Texarkana, Texas as well as their spouses, Judi Reed and Scott Taylor. He is also survived by five grandchildren, Hannah and Tripp Reed along with Allie, Austin, and Grayson Taylor.

Charles was born in Mount Pleasant, Texas on June 15, 1940 and he graduated from Mount Pleasant High School. He later attended college and played football at Texarkana Junior College, Stephen F. Austin, and The University of Arkansas at Monticello. He received two Masters’ Degrees from East Texas State University.

Charles was much better known in Texarkana as “Coach” where he made his name as both a football and track coach for Liberty Eylau High School and later as an Assistant Principal. While he was very successful as a coach, sending many of his athletes on to college and professional careers subsequent to winning accolades in Texas High School sports, it was his love of kids and desire to see his students and athletes reach their highest potential that made Coach Reed so loved in the Liberty Eylau and Texarkana community. His love of his students went well beyond the typical coach and educator and Coach Reed ensured that not just the academic needs of his students were fulfilled, but even their material needs as well. Be those needs food, clothing, or athletic gear, Coach Reed did everything in his power to see that the kids at Liberty Eylau were well taken care of at all times. Even upon retirement, Coach Reed focused his time and efforts on helping others. His primary focus continued to be mentoring children and he was both a volunteer and sponsor at Watersprings Ranch.

Perhaps the greatest part of Coach Reed’s story is his salvation, which came later in life. He was led to the Lord at Trinity Baptist Church and he served as both a Deacon and a member of the Gideons. Coach was never shy to tell those around him how great God had been in his life and in the life of his family. It was so important to him that every person he came into contact with knew that he loved God and how much God loved them. He was bold and proud of his faith and was a shining example of what we should all strive for in our Christian Walk.

Funeral Services will be held at Trinity Baptist Church on Saturday, March 18, 2017 at 10:00 am. Services will be led by Wallace Edgar and Bill Saxby. The visitation will be from 6:00 – 8:00 pm on Friday, March 17, 2017 at Texarkana Funeral Home Arkansas. Burial will be at Memorial Gardens. Donations may be made in his honor at Watersprings Ranch 7707 Sanderson Lane, Texarkana, Arkansas 71854.
