PG girls dominate; boys defeated

Hawks’ rally falls short in loss

- By Josh Richert Assistant Sports Editor

Pleasant Grove’s boys basketball season is off to a rough start against high-quality opponents.

The Hawks led Class 5A Longview for over half the game but had to play catch-up in the second half, and a late surge by PG came up short in a 61-50 loss to the Lobos Tuesday at Hawk Gym.

The Lobos (2-1) switched to zone in second half and held the Hawks to just seven field goals over final 16

minutes, including just a pair of threes and a putback in the fourth period.

“Once we get this group of kids to all play together, we’re going to be fine,” Pleasant Grove coach Billy Brewer said. “We’re a good team now, but we’ll be a better team later. We just have to keep playing hard and working together.”

Lobo center Cadell Williams played with four fouls down the stretch and took over the game late, scoring 10 of his 16 points for Longview over the final 7:24. Williams also had seven rebounds and five blocks.

The Hawks (0-2) took a 3329 lead 35 seconds into the second half, but their shooting went cold. Longview took advantage with a 13-0 run over the next 3:40 to build a 42-33 advantage.

The teams traded basket for basket over the last 2:40 of the third quarter, PG cutting its deficit to 49-41 to start the final quarter.

Williams, who had six points through three periods, hit a pair free throws to make it a 10-point game again, but Coleton Hall had a putback with 6:38 left. Peter Gavriel had a free throw, and Cory Menah drained a 3-pointer to make it 51-47.

Menah answered another Williams’ layup with another trey, cutting the deficit to 53-50. Pleasant Grove got no closer.

Pleasant Grove’s largest lead in first half was 5 points (20-15), and Longview’s largest lead in first half was 3 points (9-6). Both teams had 35 rebounds in the game. Longview committed 21 turnovers, and PG had 11 turnovers.

“I’m not worried about losing these games early because we have somethings to figure out and things we need to iron out,” Brewer said. “John Tyler (who PG opened the season with a loss to) and Longview are quality, athletic teams. They’ll help us get ready for when district comes along.”

Menah led all scorers with 19 points, Jason Smith added 13 points, and Gavriel had 10 and seven rebounds.

Jaleel Bourque and D’Keilen Lynch contributed seven rebounds each, Lynch scoring 16, including four 3-pointers, and adding four assists. Jay Head had 12 points and five rebounds.

In the junior varsity game, Longview built a 26-7 halftime lead and then had to hold off the Hawks for a 3328 win. Roger Webb led the Lobos with 13 points, and Dale Wallace added eight. Coryuntae Jones scored 13 for PG.

Longview won the ninth grade game, 45-40, with Traveon Webster scoring 11 points. Caleb Bolden paced the Hawks with 11 points, and Garrett Adams added nine. longview 15 14 20 12 — 61 pleasant Grove 17 14 10 9 — 50
