Gore nominated for sportsmanship honor
Veteran Miami Dolphins running back Frank Gore is a nominee for the 2018 Art Rooney Sportsmanship Award, the NFL announced on Wednesday.
Gore, the NFL’s fourth alltime leading rusher in his 14th season, was nominated by his teammates for the award, which recognizes players around the league who exemplify outstanding sportsmanship on the field.
Gore, who won the award with the Indianapolis Colts in 2016, has played a significant role in his first season with the Dolphins.
He leads the team with 528 yards rushing (4.5 yards per carry), as he continues to inch his way up the NFL record books.
Gore became the only player in league history to rush for more than 500 yards in 14 consecutive seasons during Sunday’s loss to the Green Bay Packers. He had been tied with Emmitt Smith and Walter Payton, who also accomplished the feat in 13 straight seasons.
Gore trails only Smith (18,355), Payton (16,726) and Barry Sanders (15,269) on the NFL’s all-time rushing list with 14,477 yards.
Gore’s 3,481 rushing yards since 2015 are the third-most behind the Los Angeles Rams’ Todd Gurley (4,284) and Buffalo Bills’ LeSean McCoy (3,680), and ahead of Dallas Cowboys’ Ezekiel Elliott (3,445) and Los Angeles Chargers’ Melvin Gordon (3,415).
The winner of this year’s award will be announced during the NFL Honors show on February 2, the day before Super Bowl LIII.
