LB Alonso stands out

DAVIE — Friday was Day 8 of Miami Dolphins training camp, and this is how it looked:

Stock up

LB Kiko Alonso was all over the place, both against the run and pass. You’d have thought it was a regularseason game the way Alonso was using his speed to make plays. He had a tackle for loss, broke up a pass in the end zone against TE Mike Gesicki and made a nice tackle on WR Danny Amendola after a reception. An impressive day for the veteran defender.

TE Mike Gesicki was on fire in the red-zone drill. He used his size and strong hands to make numerous plays against the linebackers.

QB Ryan Tannehill’s scrambling ability was more impressive than any time during training camp. Tannehill scrambled right and left with no concern, and even stopped quickly with no repercussions. The knee looks fine.

Stock down

LBs in red-zone coverage against TEs. This drill was dreadful for linebackers such as Raekwon McMillan and Stephone Anthony. The defense was in a goal-line alignment, meaning there were no cornerbacks, so the passing matchups were basically tight ends vs. linebackers, and the LBs didn’t fare well.

Team discipline. It’d be slightly overstating things to say penalties are frequent. But they’re not rare on either side of the ball. And we’ve seen them wipe out some nice offensive plays so far in training camp. Miami’s margin of error is too slim to absorb all these flags.

Observations

CB Torry McTyer had his fourth day going with the starters (Cordrea Tankersley had had three days and Tony Lippett one day). Coach Adam Gase said McTyer, who appears to be leading the search for the starter opposite Xavien Howard, will be there until someone takes the job.

WR DeVante Parker had a nice touchdown reception between MLB Raekwon McMillan and S Minkah Fitzpatrick.

WR Leonte Carroo, who we haven’t heard from much in camp, had a nice TD of 40 yards over CB Taveze Calhoun and S Maurice Smith.

LT Laremy Tunsil had a second consecutive strong showing vs. DE Robert Quinn. Other DEs such as Cam Wake and Andre Branch were in hot pursuit of QB Ryan Tannehill at times. But not Quinn, who was being handled by Tunsil.

QB Brock Osweiler had a decent day with two TDs. But on one TD, he dropped the snap and threw the ball in the end zone where WR Rashawn Scott made a nice play.

WR Rashawn Scott had a couple of nice receptions, the TD from Osweiler and another of about 40 yards from Osweiler. Scott is a long-shot for the 53-man roster but he’s steady.

QB David Fales had a nice TD pass to TE Thomas Duarte, who went down low to make the grab, in a red zone drill.

RB Kenyan Drake had a good blitz pickup vs. LB Kiko Alonso. So far, the RBs have been solid in pass protection.

G Josh Sitton did a nice job picking up DE Charles Harris on a Ryan Tannehill incomplete pass. Harris, who was playing inside at DT on this particular play, has quietly improved his pass rush this camp.

One day after actor Andy Garcia attended practice, pro wrestler Big Show and ex-NFL coach Rob Ryan attended practice.

Injury news

DE William Hayes (right hamstring) missed his first practice.

WR Isaiah Ford (left shoulder) didn’t practice for the third consecutive day.

C-G Jake Brendel (right calf ) missed his seventh straight practice.

TE A.J. Derby (foot) didn’t practice for the third consecutive day.

TE MarQueis Gray (right leg) returned to practice after missing Thursday.
