Hallandale may get apartment complex
Six-story rental project would be used for ‘work force housing’
A developer has proposed a sixstory, 200-unit rental apartment project in Hallandale Beach.
The $30 million project is planned for an empty parcel at 200 NW Eighth Ave.
The project — with a clubhouse and fitness center, playground and rooftop access — would have one-, two- and three-bedroom units with rents ranging from $1,213 to $1,681, said Chikia Wright, project manager for the developer, Hallandale Beachbased Urban Farmers Inc.
The project is considered work force housing and the units would be “priced to appeal to people in need of quality housing at an affordable price point,” Terry C. Booty, president of Urban Farmers Inc., wrote in a letter to the city.
Prospective residents, he said, would include “the under-served community of working-class people.”
“This population of people are priced out of Class A locations and do not qualify for income restricted multifamily housing,” he added. “It is anticipated that the occupants of the apartments will be firemen, teachers, police personnel, and other service professionals.”
A community meeting to discuss the plans was scheduled for Aug. 2 at the Hallandale Beach Cultural Center, 410 SE Third St. The project is scheduled to go before the city’s Planning and Zoning Board in September or October, said Keven Klopp, director of development services.
“It is anticipated that the occupants of the apartments will be firemen, teachers, police personnel, and other service professionals.”
