Miami Beach cops are DJs for spring break

- By Johnny Diaz Staff writer

Call them beat cops. The Miami Beach Police Department has two officers working as DJs inside a lifeguard stand on weekends during the busy spring break month of March.

Wearing headphones and bopping to the beats, the police DJs are Sgt. Luis Corps and Detective Chris Mitchell. Since March 3, they’ve been playing music from 1 to 6 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays at a refurbished lifeguard stand on the beach at Sixth Street.

Blaring speakers are posted outside the white wooden stand.

Department spokesman Ernesto Rodriguez said the idea “came from some of our special event officers who just wanted to come up with a new, innovative way to connect with the community for the large spring break crowds.”

Rodriguez said the officers were selected for the DJ detail because they already do it on their own time and have their own equipment.

“This is something they enjoy doing,” he said. “So far, it’s been extremely positive.”

The officers don’t just spin Cardi B, Cupid and the latest reggaeton dance hits.

They also remind Spring Breakers about the dos and don’ts in Miami Beach, such as cleaning up after themselves and not leaving coolers, tents and alcohol behind. The city recently launched the “Respect the Scene, #KeepMBClean’’ campaign for spring break to tamp down the loud music and drunken behavior.
