A North Lauderdale student is among several in north and central Broward County making waves in their early college years.

Many students in those areas of the county recently ventured off to college for the fall semester, some for the first time in their academic careers.

North Lauderdale resident Zachary Cluggish has been recognized in the Provost’s List at Troy University in Alabama for the 2017-2018 academic year.

The Provost's List honors full-time undergraduate students who are registered for 12 semester hours and who have a grade point average of at least 3.65.

In addition, Plantation resident Luis Ferrer has enrolled at Carleton College in Minnesota as a member of the class of 2021. Ferrer is part of a group of 526 students that were selected from a pool of 6,502 applicants. Ferrer and his fellow incoming peers represent 46 states and 21 countries.

Michael Akuchie, a St. Thomas Aquinas High School graduate, is one of more than 400 Youngstown State University freshmen awarded a scholarship this fall semester. Akuchie received the Provost Scholarship, which awards high-achieving out-of-state students and ranges from $4,000 to $6,000.

Akuchie is studying prebusiness at the university in Ohio.

Meanwhile, Sean Tromans from Sunrise was recently initiated into the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, the nation's oldest and most selective all-discipline collegiate honor society. Tromans is among approximately 30,000 students, faculty, professional staff and alumni to be initiated into Phi Kappa Phi each year. Membership is by invitation only and requires nomination and approval by a chapter.
