Gators suspend two more players

GAINESVILLE — UF coach Jim McElwain was shocked to find out Wednesday he would have to suspend starting TB Jordan Scarlett and another player for the Gators’ season opener against Michigan.

But McElwain said he was not about to let the team’s leading returning rusher play, even if it further diminished his team’s chances to win.

Scarlett and redshirt freshman WR Rick Wells will join eight other players McElwain has suspended for the highprofile, nationally televised matchup.

The suspensions are related to the seven suspensions handed down Aug. 14 for alleged misuse of school funds, according to a source.

UF Police Department spokesman Maj. Brad Barber confirmed there is an ongoing investigation into alleged credit card fraud by Gators football players. McElwain said he believed no more players are involved. “I didn’t expect these. I don’t expect any more,” McElwain said. “But at the same time, if there is, it will be dealt with. Like I said, some places, who knows, you might try to figure it out and yet at the end of the day, the positive is we’re going to handle what it is and not run and hide.”

Star WR Antonio Callaway headlined the group of players previously tied in the incident. All of them remain suspended indefinitely.

Freshman James Robinson also is suspended his Aug. 21 citation for marijuana possession.
