Michael Edelberg knows the combination of romantic still life paintings and sports might not be a traditional combination. The curator of Pembroke Pines gallery Studio 18 says that’s exactly the point.

On May 5, the gallery’s latest exhibit, ‘Romance, Still Life & Sports’ will premiere.

“I always say ‘have a little something for everyone,’ ” Edelberg explains. “The sports part is for the people who have absolutely no interest in romance or still life.”

The show, which will feature over 80 pieces by 20 different South Florida-based artists, will combine media including photography, oil, sculpture, digital, acrylic and more.

Edelberg says the idea for the theme started with Iva Rom-Lorenz, a painter from Fort Lauderdale whose portfolio includes still life paintings of floral arrangements — and LeBron James.

Along with her traditionalstyle works, Rom-Lorenz also specializes in large, oil paintings of athletes that Edeleberg describes as “interpretive action pieces.”

“A true artist is an artist,” the curator says of Rom-Lorenz’s range. “Talent is abundance.”

‘Romance, Still Life & Sports’ will debut on May 5 with an opening reception and run through June14.

It’s the third of a seven-show series Edelberg has planned for Studio 18, which he describes as “Broward’s best kept secret.”

‘Romance, Still Life & Sports’ runs from May 5 through June 14 at Studio 18, 1101 Poinciana Drive in Pembroke Pines. Opening reception will take place from 7 to 9 p.m. May 5.
