Easter bunnies brighten an already sunny day

- By JESSICA LINDSEY

Miss Rainey’s story time was pushed back one day due to inclement weather, and it paid off. Thursday was a perfect cool spring day to have a fun story and great pre-easter festivities.

At 10 a.m. children gathered at Fire Station Park to listen to Miss Rainey of the Starkville Public Library read a story about Easter, and after she finished, all of the children were set loose to hunt for eggs.

The best part came after the egg hunt, though, because the children who wanted to hold a bunny were able to get their picture taken with a black bunny named Licorice. There were two bunnies that Miss Rainey was able to bring - Licorice and a white rabbit named Snowball.

“I’m so glad it’s nice out today, but I was a little afraid no one was going to show up because at 9:59 not a soul was here yet,” Loraine Walker, the Children’s Librarian known as Miss Rainey, said. “It is colder today so people were probably just staying in their cars until time because we had a great turnout today.”

However, as it does start to warm up and the weather gets nicer, all of Miss Rainey’s activ

ities will be outside even with the library opening up to the public on Monday.

“It’s easier to spread out and have more kids come to programs,” Walker said. “Sometimes it is hard to get everyone who comes to the events in the room in the library. Being at Fire Station Park lets us be loud and have fun Monday through Thursday from June to July. We’re going to have STEAM events, art projects, and fun guest speakers that everyone will enjoy. I’m excited for what we’ve got going this year.”

Walker has kept up story time through the pandemic through Facebook videos of her reading books in fun locations with equally fun themes the kids seem to love, but she is glad to be back in person and see all of the kids again. The Starkville Public Library opens to the public on Monday, April 5 at 9 a.m., and this also includes the children’s library which is ready to welcome back all children looking for an adventure.
