Jimmy G sounds off about rumors on his future

Uncertainty abounds for Niners’ QB as team drafts future signal caller

Jimmy Garoppolo has broken his silence. The Niners quarterback talked on a number of programs Tuesday morning about rumors floating around, along with being in San Francisco essentially as a mentor for No. 3 overall pick Trey Lance.

While on the Damon Amendolara show on CBS, he was asked if he would have welcomed a return to New England.

“I don’t know. We never really got to cross that bridge,” Garoppolo answered. “So, you never know where your path is going to take you in the NFL. I thought I was going to be in New England for my entire career. That didn’t go as planned.

“So it’s kind of one of those businesses where you have to be ready for anything. You’ve gotta be on your toes, you’ve gotta be able to react and however the story plays out, you’ve gotta be able to run with it.”

Garoppolo was the Patriots secondround draft choice in 2014, being groomed as Tom Brady’s successor. With Brady still winning Super Bowls, and looking in good form in his 40s, the Patriots ultimately decided to trade him when his rookie deal was up, sending him to the Niners for a second-round pick.

With Brady gone, and San Francisco trading a fortune to the Miami Dolphins to move up into the third spot for Lance, it appears Jimmy G’s days are numbered out west. By the sound of it, he’s just rolling with the punches.

Asked if people forget he’s been 24-8 as a starting quarterback, Garoppolo said: “That’s not really the NFL. It’s a what have you done for me lately business … just gotta do it again.”

On ESPN radio, Garoppolo said both Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch have been up front with him throughout the process of drafting Lance.

“The communication has been good,” Garoppolo said. “There really hasn’t been anything unsaid. Everything has been put on the table. I’m just happy to have the opportunity to play football. At the end of the day, that’s what I’m here for, that’s what I signed up for. As long as I have the opportunity to go out there and win some games and play good football, that’s all you can ask for at the end of the day. … All you really need is an opportunity. If you get an opportunity, you’ve got to take advantage of it and that’s what I’m trying to do.”
