March 18, 1919: The formal announcement to the clergy and people of the Roman Catholic church in the archdiocese of Santa Fe and the Rev. Albert Daegar O.F.M. of Jemez Pueblo, N.M., has been appointed archbishop of the archdiocese, succeeding the Most Rev. J.B. Pitaval, is contained in a letter sent out last night by the archbishop. The appointment of Father Daegar as archbishop Pitaval’s successor was announced in an Associated Press dispatch from Rome in the New Mexican several weeks ago.
March 18, 1969: The New Mexico House Appropriations and Finance Committee recommended passage of a $224 million general appropriations act tied directly to a $25 million tax increase. The action shortly after midnight followed five hours of consideration of the measure, which was introduced in the House Monday.
March 18, 1994: From 1987 through the end of last year, the Santa Fe Ski Co. used 5.3 million gallons of water for “domestic purposes” — primarily flushing toilets and drinking — that it did not have a legal right to use, according to records at the state engineer’s office. Officials with the ski company and the U.S. Forest Service, which owns the land on which the Santa Fe Ski Area is located and the area’s water rights, said steps are being taken to make up the overdiversion and to ensure that overdiversions don’t occur in the future. Environmental attorney Steve Sugarman said purchasing water rights from downstream water users — threaten the traditional way of life of rural communities dependent on the Rio en Medio and Rio Chupadero stream system.
