Education standouts
Three Santa Fe-area people are among 27 exceptional science and mathematics students named Adams State University Porter Scholars for 2017-18. This year, the program awarded $89,500 for scholarships and focused academic programs. Located in Alamoso, Colo., Adams State offers in-state tuition to New Mexico
residents. The Porter Scholars:
Noel Prandoni, daughter of Manita Prandoni and Peter Prandoni, is a graduate of Santa Fe High School. She has an interdisciplinary major with emphases in biology, biochemistry, adventure leadership and sociology. This is her fourth year as a Porter Scholar. She also received adventure sports and athletic scholarships. Her goal is to become a climbing guide in South America.
Isabel Rodriguez, daughter of Bill Rodriguez and Laura Mayo-Rodriguez, is a graduate of the Academy for Technology and the Classics. She is majoring in physics and pre-engineering and hopes to enter the field of environmental engineering. She also received the Vice President’s Merit Scholarship, the Woodard Memorial Scholarship and the New Mexico Trails Girl Scout Gold Award Scholarship.
Wyatt Moran, son of Michael Moran and Dawn Wink, is a graduate of St. Michael’s High School. He is majoring in wildlife biology and is a member of the Adams State climbing team and the Adams State Adventure Program. He also received the Vice President’s Merit Scholarship, the Donald Hilton Hopper Memorial Scholarship and an adventure sports scholarship. This is his fourth year as a Porter Scholar.
The late William A. Porter and his wife, Joan, established the Porter Scholars Program in 2007 through the largest gift in Adams State history: $5.8 million worth of stock in E*TRADE, which Porter founded in 1983. Porter went on to launch the International Securities Exchange. Dubbed “the forefather of online trading,” Porter earned a degree in mathematics from Adams State in 1951.
