Santa Fe New Mexican

The past 100 years

From The Santa Fe New Mexican: Oct. 30, 1917: The European way has aroused a good deal of interest among the Indians in this part of the country, but so far the enlistments in the various branches of the service has been few, according to H.F. Robinson, of Albuquerque, general superintendent of irrigation for the Pueblo Indians who passed through here today on his way to various pueblos where he will look into irrigation matters.

“It may be of interest to note,” he said, “that nine Indians from the Hopi reservation, who had never seen more than a tin cup full of water at a time, have joined the navy to sail the ocean blue. I do not know just what was the impulse they obeyed for I imagine the knowledge of Hopi Indians of service in the navy and salt water is limited.”

Oct. 30, 1992: A recent poll of registered voters in the Santa Fe and Los Alamos areas showed that more than 25 percent didn’t know which state Senate district they lived in, and that probably has a lot to do with the recent redrawing of district boundaries, according to a state elections official.

“Those old districts stood for 10 years, and people got used to knowing their districts,” said Hoyt Clifton, director of the elections bureau in the secretary of state’s office.

“We redistricted everybody in 1991, so people may be in districts they weren’t in before,” Clifton said. “Each Senate district has got new people in it.”
