Mariners head from Oracle to San Diego

-

The Seattle Mariners’ road homestand just got longer.

As they were finishing two games in San Francisco that were supposed to be in Seattle but relocated to Oracle Park because of air quality from wildfires, the Mariners were told by Major League Baseball that their upcoming series against the Padres has been relocated to San Diego.

As it was in San Francisco, Seattle will be the home team for all three games of the series that begins Friday night, meaning the Padres could be in position to clinch their first playoff berth since 2006 while playing as visitors in their home ballpark.

Seattle has three more home games remaining on its schedule beginning Monday against Houston.

Seattle manager Scott Servais said the team learned of the change around 11:15 a.m., about two hours before first pitch against San Francisco. Seattle lost 64 to the Giants.

Servais said when the team left Seattle on Wednesday morning, almost everyone believed it’d be a twoday trip.

“We were led to believe that everything was going to clear up in Seattle,” Servais said. “We can’t control the weather. It’s bigger than all of us and what’s going on there with the smoke and whatnot. Certainly understand why we have to go. But I don’t think anybody was really prepared for it.” DeGrom daytoday: The Mets’ Jacob deGrom is daytoday after leaving his start Wednesday night with a right hamstring spasm.

Manager Luis Rojas said deGrom played catch without pain Thursday and had “bounced back after yesterday’s scary moment.”

He exited after a surprisingly rough two innings that could put a wrinkle in his bid for a third straight NL Cy Young Award.

The righthander was pulled after only 40 pitches and one strikeout. He allowed three earned runs in a game for the the first time this season, pushing his ERA back over 2.00 at 2.09. Briefly: There’s a chance Minnesota righthander Jake Odorizzi (blister Wednesday night) could pitch again this season but the team won’t know his status for a few more days . ... Angels DH Shohei Ohtani, hitting .189, wasn’t in the lineup for the fifth consecutive day. Manager Joe Maddon is giving Ohtani time to “regroup.”
