Former A’s infielder Mateo tests positive

-

A week after he was traded from the A’s to the Padres, infielder Jorge Mateo tested positive for the coronavirus.

San Diego manager Jayce Tingler said Wednesday that Mateo tested positive in his intake test before he reported to the team and has not been to the ballpark. Mateo is experiencing symptoms and is selfisolating.

Oakland dealt Mateo to San Diego on June 30 for a player to be named.

Welcome back: Several teams welcomed back players who might have been exposed to the coronavirus.

In Boston, third baseman Rafael Devers practiced at Fenway Park for the first time since the Red Sox opened summer camp. Devers and an unspecified number of other players were working out at nearby Boston College and have since tested negative three times.

Texas first baseman Ronald Guzman was on the field after missing the first five days of workouts. Although he was at the facility, he wasn’t cleared for workouts while still going through intake testing.

The only Texas players still not cleared to participate are right fielder Joey Gallo and lefthander Brett Martin, both of whom tested positive.

In Cleveland, outfielder Franmil Reyes was cleared by the team’s medical staff to return to the field after being isolated for attending a party over the July 4 weekend.

Also, outfielder Delino DeShields Jr., who tested positive for the coronavirus, is traveling to Cleveland after he had one negative test. He will be tested again when he arrives.

The defending AL champion Astros were without infielder Alex Bregman because his test results were delayed. Gray to open for Reds: Cincinnati manager David Bell chose Sonny Gray to be his Opening Day starter. Gray’s other two Opening Day starts were for the A’s in 2014 and 2015. He threw a combined 14 shutout innings in those starts and got a win and a nodecision. Briefly: Washington’s Max Scherzer threw 48 pitches in a sharp workout at Nationals Park . ... Tampa Bay’s Charlie Morton allowed two runs and four hits over four innings in a simulated game at Tropicana Field. Lefties Blake Snell and Ryan Yarbrough and righthander Trevor Richards also pitched. ... In Atlanta, Adam Duvall launched his bid for a starting job when he hit a tworun homer to highlight the Braves’ first scrimmage.
