Three teens killed in carpole crash
Two others transported to Eden Medical Center
Three teens were killed and two others were injured in a singlevehicle crash Christmas night just outside of Pleasanton, according to the California Highway Patrol.
At about 9:57 p.m., a vehicle was traveling south on Foothill
Road near Castlewood Drive in unincorporated Alameda County when, for an unknown reason, the vehicle crossed over the northbound lane, said Officer Tyler Hahn, a CHP spokesman.
The vehicle struck a power pole on the right shoulder and then wrapped around a tree, trapping three occupants inside the vehicle and ejecting the two others, according to CHP. The three teens who were killed, including the driver, were pronounced dead at the scene while the two other victims were rushed to Eden Medical Center in Castro Valley.
The victims were all in their teens but no exact ages or names were released. Hahn confirmed that two of the boys who were killed were brothers.
A supervisor on the scene said there were no initial signs of alcohol impairment, Hahn said. Toxicology reports will be provided later by the Alameda County coroner’s office.
Sarah Lopez, a spokeswoman for the Dublin Unified School District, said school officials are expecting to get the names of the victims from the coroner’s office Friday. The school district was waiting to issue a statement until officials confirmed the victims’ identities.
“What happened is absolutely heartbreaking, but we are waiting on confirmation
from the Alameda County coroner’s office to confirm if any of our students were involved,” Lopez said.
The power pole that was struck severed at the base and upended, which caused a transformer to rupture, officials said. Approximately 20 gallons of mineral oil spilled onto the roadway and adjacent dirt shoulder.
On Thursday, the road remained closed as crews made repairs to the pole.
