Stanford erases 11point deficit, knocks off USF

-

Daejon Davis and Oscar da Silva each scored 18 points and Stanford rallied to beat USF 6456 at Maples Pavilion on Tuesday night.

The Dons (93) led 2418 at halftime, and after Khalil Shabazz hit a jumper 51⁄2 minutes into the second half, USF was in front 3524.

Stanford (101) responded, taking its first lead of the second half on Davis’ layup that made it 4846 with just less than four minutes remaining.

Stanford was ahead to stay. A key moment came with the Cardinal leading by four with about a minute left. Spencer Jones then drained a 3 to make it 5750. USF got no closer than six the rest of the way.

Charles Minlend led USF with 18 points and Jamaree Bouyea added 15. The Dons committed 22 turnovers.

“We controlled that game for 30 minutes without taking care of the ball,” USF head coach Todd Golden said. “That’s what’s really disappointing. I don’t think this game was indicative of who we are. If people watched this game, the only time they saw us all year, I think this is a terrible representation of what we’ve done over the first 10 games of our season.

“It hurts, but nobody’s going to feel sorry for us.”

The Cardinal committed 19 turnovers. Part of Stanford’s offensive struggles could be a result of the absence of freshman point guard Tyrell Terry, who missed the game with an upperbody injury. Terry first felt the injury during shootaround before the game. Stanford officials don’t believe his injury is serious.
