Staley hurt; Blair out for season

- By Eric Branch Eric Branch covers the 49ers for The San Francisco Chronicle.

The 49ers’ first loss of the season was even more painful than initially thought.

A day after a 2724 overtime loss to the Seahawks, head coach Kyle Shanahan said Pro Bowl left tackle Joe Staley had sustained a broken finger that could sideline him “for a few weeks” and edge rusher Ronald

Blair had suffered a torn ACL that will end his season.

Staley, whose finger was also dislocated, was seeking a second opinion to see if it will require surgery. If it is needed, he will miss a few games, Shanahan said. Staley returned Monday after missing the previous six games with a broken fibula. Wide receiver Emmanuel

Sanders, who has a rib cartilage injury, probably will be a gametime decision when the 49ers host the Cardinals on Sunday, Shanahan said.

Meanwhile, in other injuries from Monday’s game, nose tackle D.J. Jones (groin) is expected to miss Sunday’s game, running back Matt Breida (ankle) is daytoday and linebacker Azeez AlShaair is in the concussion protocol.

Shanahan was “hopeful” tight end George Kittle (ankle, knee) and kicker Robbie Gould (quadriceps) could return from onegame absences, but said their status was “pretty similar” to last week.

“Kittle has a much bigger injury” than Gould, Shanahan said. “But Kittle is a little bit of a different bird. We’re never going to decide on (Kittle’s status) too early in the week.”

Gould was replaced by undrafted rookie Chase McLaughlin, who made his first three kicks, from 43, 39 and 47 yards. However, McLaughlin pulled his 47yard attempt so badly in overtime that it landed in the lockerroom tunnel.

Said Shanahan of Gould’s status for Sunday: “Because he’s a kicker, it’s kind of hard to tell. ... So we’ve got to get him out here and test him on his kicking here this week.”

The 49ers will have a tryout for edge rushers Wednesday.

Rugged return: Staley and right tackle Mike McGlinchey took turns Monday being beaten by Seattle defensive end Jadeve

on Clowney, who had one sack, five quarterback hits, a forced fumble and returned a fumble for a 10yard touchdown.

Staley hadn’t played since Sept. 15 and McGlinchey was returning from a fourgame absence after having arthroscopic knee surgery.

“I think anytime you haven’t played football in a while, it’s always a challenge to get back out there no matter what you do in practice,” Shanahan said. “I thought Clowney played very well. He’s done it before, but I thought it was definitely his best game of the year — so we’ve got to take that into account. They weren’t at their best. I thought they had their good plays, but definitely had some noticeable bad plays that ended up hurting us a little bit.”
