Pegula prevails — earns 1st WTA title

Jessica Pegula won the first WTA title of her career with a 62, 62 victory over Camila Giorgi at the Citi Open.

Pegula is a 25yearold American ranked 79th. Her parents own the NFL’s Buffalo Bills and NHL’s Buffalo Sabres.

Pegula was 48 this season before winning five straight matches at Washington’s hardcourt tournament.

“It’s been extremely gratifying. This is what you work for: to win tournaments. It sounds cliche, (but) the journey makes it all that much sweeter,” she said.

In the men’s final, Nick Kyrgios edged No. 3 seed Daniil Medvedev 76 (6), 76 (4).
