Pegula prevails — earns 1st WTA title

Jessica Pegula won the first WTA title of her career with a 62, 62 victory over Camila Giorgi at the Citi Open.

Pegula is a 25yearold American ranked 79th. Her parents own the NFL’s Buffalo Bills and NHL’s Buffalo Sabres.

Pegula was 48 this season before winning five straight matches at Washington’s hardcourt tournament.

“It’s been extremely gratifying. This is what you work for: to win tournament­s. It sounds cliche, (but) the journey makes it all that much sweeter,” she said.

In the men’s final, Nick Kyrgios edged No. 3 seed Daniil Medvedev 76 (6), 76 (4). WNBA: Courtney Williams scored 28 points and the Connecticu­t Sun won their seventh straight game, beating the host New York Liberty 9479 . ... Candace Parker scored 21 points and the Los Angeles Sparks defeat the visiting Seattle Storm 8375. ... Brittney Griner had 26 points, nine rebounds, eight assists and four blocks to help the host Phoenix Mercury beat the Washington Mystics 10382. Soccer: Manchester City opened the campaign by lifting the Community Shield after a shootout victory over Liverpool in London. In MLS, Alejandro Bedoya scored the opening goal in the Philadelph­ia Union’s 51 victory over host D.C. United, then ran to a microphone and shouted to the crowd: “Hey, Congress, do something now! End gun violence! Let’s go!” Marco Fabian had two goals and an assist for the Union. ...
