Bochy’s low memories at altitude

DENVER — Everywhere the Giants go during Bruce Bochy’s farewell tour, he is asked about his fondest memories of managing there. Colorado reporters asked him twice over the weekend and he genuinely struggled to remember any.

Assuming Bochy does not manage elsewhere after 2019, he ended his 25year career at Coors with a record of 96118. A fair number of those losses ended with one swing.

“There have been a few walkoff homers,” Bochy said. “I don’t want to think about those. I want to stay in a good mood.”

Nolan Arenado hit one on Father’s Day in 2017. His grand slam completed a cycle and turned a 53 Giants lead into a 75 Colorado victory.

Then there was Santiago Casilla’s limpoff in 2014. Bochy sent his closer to the plate with explicit instructions not to swing lest he get hurt. Bochy did not think he had to order Casilla not to run the bases, either, because that seemed implied in Order No 1.

Casilla swung, hit a high chopper up the middle, smelled a hit and busted up the line only to hurt his hamstring. He lost four weeks of that championship season.

“He was flying the first 40 feet, wasn’t he?” Bochy said Sunday with a smile.

Or the time Hunter Pence crashed into the rightfield fence at Coors and crumpled onto the warning track. Bochy ran the 350 feet, at altitude, to check on his oufielder. When Pence said he was fine and started to get up, Bochy ordered him to stay down so the manager could catch his breath before running back to the dugout.

At least Bochy stayed upright that day.

He once ran onto the field as the Padres’ manager to argue when Bip Roberts was called out on the bases. Bochy got his feet tangled with one of his coaches, the late Rob Picciolo, and faceplanted onto the field.

When Bochy returned to Coors the next day, he was greeted by a chalk outline of where he fell, courtesy of the Rockies’ Larry Walker.

Dyson hurt: Sam Dyson’s tenure with the Twins began with two threerun outings, a blown save and two batters retired. On Sunday, Minnesota placed Dyson on the 10day injured list with biceps tendinitis.

Asked whether Dyson exhibited any arm issues before Wednesday’s trade, Bochy said, “Absolutely not, no.”

Dyson pitched 12 times in July, 11 of the outings scoreless, holding opponents to two hits over his final seven outings. Four times last month he pitched on consecutive days, as he did with Minnesota.

Briefly: The Giants optioned Zach Green to Sacramento when Evan Longoria was activated. Green got his first two bigleague hits in his July 21 debut against the Mets, then went 0for11 in limited playing time thereafter. … Scooter Gennett said of his homer Saturday, “It felt like I hadn’t hit one in a year.” Actually, he hit the last of his 23 homers last season Sept. 21 at Miami.
