Arizona center Shipley out for season with tear

-

The Cardinals have lost starting center A.Q. Shipley for the season with a torn right ACL and will replace him with rookie Mason Cole.

Head coach Steve Wilks confirmed the injury Monday, saying the center “heard something pop” in his knee during a goal-line drill in training camp Saturday.

Shipley, a six-year NFL veteran, started all 16 games each of the past two seasons, the only member of the Cardinals’ offensive line to play every game either year.

Shipley signed with Arizona as a free agent in 2015, working his way to a starting role after bouncing around the NFL early in his career.

The 6-foot-5, 307-pounder was a third-round draft pick out of Michigan, where he was a four-year starter but only one season — his junior year — was at center. Packers’ tackle OK: Green Bay left tackle David Bakhtiari avoided a serious injury after being carted off the field at practice during the weekend.

Bakhtiari was hurt during the Family Night practice on Saturday at Lambeau Field. He walked to a cart with his left shoe removed before being driven back to the locker room.

“It was weird,” Bakhtiari said Monday, when the Packers returned to practice following a day off. “It didn’t really feel bad, just kind of putting some weight into it and it just told me no. That was kind of (why) I was worried, but it should be all right.” Briefly: New England released receiver Malcolm Mitchell three days after the Patriots signed receiver Eric Decker as a free agent . ... The Lions have removed defensive end Ziggy Ansah from the active/physically unable to perform list. They have not said what injury caused Ansah to go on the PUP list. Ansah played in 14 games last season and finished with 12 sacks.
