Stanford teammates top nation in javelin

Stanford junior Mackenzie Little won the javelin with a heave of 198 feet Thursday on Day 2 of the NCAA track and field championsh­ips in Eugene, Ore.

Teammate Jenna Gray, a senior who also plays on the school’s volleyball team, finished second with a throw of 187-11.

Both Stanford women set personal bests and helped the Cardinal into first place as a team. Their 25 points led Florida (17) and Georgia (14) with two days remaining in the meet.

Stanford senior Lena Giger reached 57-8½, good for third place in the shot put.

USF’s Charlotte Taylor finished fifth in the 10,000 meters with a time of 32:17.95. All of the top five finishers broke the 30-year-old meet record. Fellow Don Weronika Pyzik finished 10th.

Stanford’s Valarie Allman placed eighth in the hammer throw (208-5).

Cal junior Lauren Martinez took 11th place in the pole vault, setting a school record by clearing 14 feet, 1¼ inches, the same height cleared by the fourthplac­e finisher. Stanford’s Erika Malaspina tied for 12th. Swimming: Ashley Neidigh and Zane Grothe opened the first day of the TYR Pro Swim Series meet in Santa Clara with victories in the 1,500-meter freestyle. Neidigh won the women’s race in 16:17.43. Grothe edged Mexico’s Ricardo Vargas in 15:18.43.

Gambling: New Jersey lawmakers gave final approval a bill to legalize sports betting, and bets could begin as soon as Friday if the governor quickly signs the bill into law.

Three weeks ago, New Jersey prevailed in a Supreme Court case that struck down a federal law limiting sports betting to four states. Now, any state is free to adopt laws legalizing it, and analysts expect most to do so. A report this week by Eilers & Krejcik Gaming predicted that only six states will not have approved sports betting by 2023.

Crime: Former NBA player Glen “Big Baby” Davis was charged with felony assault related to an alleged attack on a man outside a club in West Hollywood. The district attorney’s office says Davis threw the victim into a wall and caused “great bodily injury.”

WNBA: Shekinna Stricklen had a four-point play at the buzzer to give the visiting Connecticu­t Sun an 88-86 victory over the New York Liberty. Stricklen caught the ball on the wing off a pass from Jasmine Thomas, hit the shot and was fouled as time expired. The first-place Sun (6-1) trailed by 13 at the half.

⏩ Sylvia Fowles had 21 points and 12 rebounds, Maya Moore added 19 points and defending champion Minnesota won 88-80 at Washington to snap a four-game losing streak.

⏩ Alysha Clark (17 points), Natasha Howard (16) and Brenna Stewart (16) led the Seattle Storm past the host Los Angeles Sparks 88-63. Stanford alum Nneka Ogwumike had a gamehigh 19 points for Los Angeles. Seattle (6-2) is a half-game behind Connecticu­t for the best record in the WNBA.
