Soler’s homer helps Royals top Red Sox

Kansas City’s Alex Gordon hit a tying home run off Boston closer Craig Kimbrel in the ninth inning, then Jorge Soler hit a three-run homer against Brian Johnson in the 13th as the visiting Royals beat the Red Sox 7-6 on Tuesday night.

Boston led 3-2 before Gordon’s one-out drive off Kimbrel, who was trying for his 299th save but instead blew an opportunit­y for the first time in eight tries this season.

Jon Jay’s sacrifice fly in the 12th put Kansas City up 4-3. But Eduardo Nuñez homered against Kelvin Herrera in the bottom half.

In the 13th, Gordon and Whit Merrifield singled off Johnson ahead of Soler’s homer over the Green Monster.

Boston scored on a groundout and single in the bottom of the 13th, but Brian Flynn got the first save of his five-year career when Nuñez flied out to the center-field wall.

Diamondbac­ks 4, Dodgers 3: Daniel Descalso hit a goahead, two-run triple in the seventh inning as host Arizona dealt Los Angeles its seventh loss eight games. The Diamondbac­ks won for the fifth time in six games, improving to 21-8, tied with Boston for best record in baseball and Arizona’s best start through 29 games in franchise history.

Angels 3, Orioles 2: Justin Upton singled home the winning run in the ninth as host Los Angeles snapped a four-game skid. Orioles catcher Chance Sisco appeared to get knocked unconsciou­s when he slid into teammate Pedro Alvarez’s elbow while they chased a foul popup in the seventh inning. Sisco eventually walked off the field.

Yankees 4, Astros 0: Gary Sanchez hit a three-run homer in the ninth inning off Ken Giles to spoil a splendid outing by Justin Verlander as visiting New York posted its first shutout of the season. Verlander tied a career high by striking out 14 in eight shutout innings. Yankees starter Jordan Montgomery departed in the second inning after feeling tightness in his left elbow. Five relievers followed, combining for 13 strikeouts in eight innings.

Nationals 12, Pirates 4: Matt Adams homered twice and Max Scherzer held visiting Pittsburgh to three hits in 61⁄3 innings for Washington. The first six-game winner in the major leagues this year, Scherzer drove in his second run of the season with a single and scored twice.

Rangers 8, Indians 6: Joey Gallo and Isiah Kiner-Falefa homered on consecutiv­e pitches off Nick Goody in the 12th inning for visiting Texas. Cleveland’s Michael Brantley tied the game in the ninth with a two-out grand slam off Keone Kela, but the Rangers bailed out their closer who entered the game with a 6-2 lead.

Rockies 3, Cubs 1: Charlie Blackmon and David Dahl opened the game with consecutiv­e homers off Kyle Hendricks and Nolan Arenado also went deep as Colorado stopped a three-game slide. Jon Gray pitched seven innings against Chicago, which had won five in a row.

Braves 3, Mets 2: Mike Soroka, a 20-year-old right-hander, allowed one run in six innings to win his major-league debut for visiting Atlanta. The Braves began the game with four consecutiv­e hits off Noah Syndergaar­d to build a threerun cushion. Brewers 7, Reds 6: Ryan Braun hit a tie-breaking double and Travis Shaw ended an 0-for-19 slump with a two-run homer for visiting Milwaukee. Cincinnati (7-23) matched the 1931 and 1934 teams for worst 30-game start in franchise history.

Marlins 2, Phillies 1: Pinchhitte­r Yadiel Rivera singled home Cameron Maybin, who had tripled, in the 10th inning as visiting Miami won its fourth in a row while handing Philadelph­ia its fourth consecutiv­e loss.

Tigers 2, Rays 1: Matthew Boyd allowed one run in six innings and Leonys Martin hit a tie-breaking double in the fifth inning to lead host Detroit.

Blue Jays 7, Twins 4: John Curtiss wild-pitched home two runs in the 10th inning, including the winner, as visiting Toronto handed Minnesota its 11th loss in 12 games. Kendrys Morales homered twice for the Blue Jays.

Cardinals 3, White Sox 2: Matt Carpenter homered in the ninth to tie it and Yadier Molina followed with an RBI single three batters later as host St. Louis snapped a three-game losing streak.
