Temperature records could fall throughout the weekend
Dry conditions and temperatures in the 70s are forecast into next week throughout the Bay Area
As the Bay Area basked in spring-like weather Friday that broke temperature records for the date, forecasters said the sunny and dry conditions would hold through the weekend and into next week.
San Jose and Half Moon Bay, at 76 and 75 degrees, respectively, logged record highs for the date on Friday, and Oakland tied its peak of 69. The old records were 73 in 1963 for San Jose, 72 in 2005 for Half Moon Bay and 69 in 2005 for Oakland.
More temperature records from the Wine Country to Half Moon Bay are expected to fall if the weekend heat lives up to projections.
“It’s going to be really nice all weekend,” said Suzanne Sims, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service.
In San Francisco, those who had to work Friday instead of hitting the beach packed outdoor spaces like Yerba Buena Gardens at lunchtime.
The grass was dotted with people stretched out in the sunshine. Office workers sweated in slacks and pressed shirts as students on a school trip paraded through and others enjoyed ice cream to cool down.
“I’ve lived here 67 years, and I don’t remember a February like this,” said Mike Barr, who lingered on a bench with Patsy Fergusson after they met for tea.
Fergusson said the warmth was a pleasant change from a previous cold and rainy spell.
“A few weeks ago, I was dressed like I was going skiing,” she said. “Of course, you can’t enjoy a sunny day anymore without thinking, oh, global warming.”
