Dodgers bench Puig after tardy arrival

-

Dodgers right fielder Yasiel Puig arrived late to the ballpark Monday and was benched by manager Dave Roberts. Puig was not in the lineup Sunday, either, after a baserunning blunder the previous day.

Roberts stopped short of saying Puig got punished Sunday, but made it clear the 26-year-old Cuban was being disciplined Monday before the NL West champions hosted San Diego.

“Yasiel has been great all year, but to be frank, there was a situation where he was supposed to be on the field today and he was late,” Roberts said. “Where we’re at right now, it has to be clear to everyone in the clubhouse that the only purpose is to prepare for the postseason, to finish the season strong and for it to be about all of us.”

This season, Puig was seemingly a model citizen for the most part. His only known discretion was an obscene gesture toward Cleveland fans in June. He ‘s batting .259 with 26 homers, 70 RBIs, 15 stolen bases and a .339 on-base percentage. Injured girl improving: The Yankees’ Todd Frazier said the condition of the young girl injured by his foul ball Wednesday has improved and she could be leaving a hospital soon.

The girl was hurt by a 105 mph drive off his bat into Yankee Stadium’s lower deck behind third base and was taken to a hospital for treatment. Frazier has been in contact with her father.

“We’ve been texting back and forth. He said she’s doing a lot better,” Frazier said Monday. “He said the hard stuff is behind now.” Briefly: Bryce Harper had flu-like symptoms and remained out of the Nationals’ lineup and on the disabled list after his bone bruise on his knee . ... The San Diego UnionTribune reported that right-hander Carter Capps will have surgery for thoracic-outlet syndrome . ... Detroit manager Brad Ausmus told reporters that first baseman Miguel Cabrera was diagnosed with two herniated disks after an MRI exam.
