Man charged with murdering ex-girlfriend

A 43-year-old San Pablo man was charged Friday with first-degree murder and discharging a gun into a vehicle for allegedly shooting his ex-girlfriend to death in Richmond as she sat in her car with her two young sons.

Lawyer Dushan McBride — who goes by his middle name — is scheduled to be arraigned Monday in Contra Costa County Superior Court in Richmond on the felony charges stemming from the killing of 29-year-old Rashanda Franklin.

He is being held in county jail in Martinez on $3.1 million bail.

McBride was arrested Wednesday while eating lunch at a Sacramento fast-food restaurant. Police say that a day earlier, he chased Franklin down in his car as she was driving her children to school in a Jeep, forced her to stop, then stood outside her vehicle door and fatally shot her in the torso. Her sons were not injured.

Franklin’s family said the two had dated for about a year but broke up a month ago. Since then, McBride had been stalking her, trying to force her to come back to him, her family said.

On Monday, McBride caused a ruckus outside the family home in Richmond where Franklin was staying, and after police made him leave, Franklin told relatives she would apply for a court restraining order the next day.

She was killed before she had a chance to file the paperwork.

“Such a senseless, senseless thing to die over,” said Franklin’s mother, Barbara Harris. “But we know justice is going to be served.”
