Police in San Mateo shot and wounded a 31-year-old man Saturday night after he slammed into a police cruiser and tried to ram several other officers, officials said Sunday.

The melee started around 10 p.m. Saturday when an officer approached Kendel Timothy Hager, who had been causing a disturbance in the parking lot at Laurie Meadows Shopping Center along Pacific Boulevard, San Mateo police Capt. Dave Norris said.

Hager suddenly rammed the officer’s patrol vehicle and then sped away from the scene, Norris said.

Several officers responded to the area and tried to stop Hager around 40th Avenue and Regan Drive. But rather than give up, the suspect drove at several cops who opened fire on the vehicle.

Hager continued on until he finally came to a stop at 39th Avenue and Gillis Street. He was detained and treated for a non-life-threatening gunshot wound, Norris said.

No one else was injured in the incident.

Hager, an Albany resident with a history of previous arrests, was treated for his wound and booked in San Mateo County Jail, Norris said. He was arrested on suspicion of three counts of assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer, failing to yield with disregard for public safety, and hit-and-run.

The names of the officers who shot at Hager were not released. One of the cops was a 34-yearold sergeant, who is a 10-year veteran of the San Mateo Police Department. The other officer is 26 years old and has been at the department for a year.

Both cops are on paid administrative leave, which is protocol. The San Mateo County district attorney’s office and the Police Department are conducting parallel investigations into the incident.
