2 Mets are injured in Santana no-hitter
The first no-hitter in Mets’ history turned out to be costly.
Outfielder Mike Baxter is expected to miss about six weeks after crashing into the fence while making an outstanding catch to preserve Johan Santana’s no-hitter in the seventh inning Friday night against St. Louis.
And reliever Ramon Ramirez is probably headed to the disabled list as well after straining his right hamstring during the postgame celebration.
The Mets said Saturday that Baxter dislocated the joint between his right collarbone and sternum and tore rib cartilage on his right side. Baxter’s left shoulder slammed into the wall when he robbed Yadier Molina of extra bases.
Ramirez, a former Giant, was injured running onto the field with teammates to mob Santana after he finished the no-hitter. Contreras hurt: Phillies reliever Jose Contreras has torn a ligament and a tendon in his right elbow and will probably miss the rest of the season.
Contreras, 40, was injured in the seventh inning Friday. An MRI scan showed he tore his ulnar collateral ligament and flexor pronator tendon. Pavano sore: Struggling Twins pitcher Carl Pavano will return to Minneapolis to have an MRI exam on his sore right shoulder. Pavano is 2-5 with a 6.00 ERA in 11 starts this season and allowed seven runs and nine hits in 32⁄ innings against the Indians on Friday. Briefly: The Blue Jays claimed right-handed pitcher Chris Schwinden on waivers from the Mets. … The Orioles acquired Triple-A outfielder-first baseman Steve Pearce from the Yankees for cash and designated infielderoutfielder Bill Hall for assignment.
