Nonprofit consultant Shana Hazan has raised and spent more than any of the six candidates. Becca Williams, a curriculum company manager, has received and spent the second most of the candidates. She has raised $67,800 in donations and spent $33,500 since last year.
Hazan, retired San Diego Unified principal Godwin Higa and vehicle service technician Jose Velazquez are running for the school board position that represents sub-district B, which covers the eastern area of San Diego Unified.
Williams, parent Lily Higman
and governmental affairs manager Cody Petterson, who is also a parent, are running for the spot that represents sub-district C, which covers the western, coastal area of San Diego Unified.
The primary and general elections for San Diego Unified are by sub-district only, meaning voters can only vote for the candidates running to represent their own sub-district. The top two vote-getters from the primary election will move on to the general election in November.
Candidates are mainly spending their campaign money on mailers, campaign paraphernalia, postage, office supplies, election filing fees, and legal and accounting services, according to their finance disclosures.
Petterson and Hazan have also gotten additional campaign help from the San Diego Education Association teachers union. The union endorsed both candidates.
The union has spent $80,500 on mailers and digital ads for Petterson. It has also spent $35,500 on mailers for Hazan.
The election is Tuesday.
