Officials: MCRD guard shoots, kills person at gate

A guard shot and killed a person Friday at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot, according to military officials.

The shooting took place around 11:50 a.m. at Gate 5 at Belleau Woods Avenue and West Washington Street.

The person drove up to the checkpoint and got out of the vehicle holding a knife with “hostile intent,” according to an MCRD statement. Base personnel repeatedly warned the person to stop before opening fire.

The person died at the scene at 12:16 p.m., according to authoritie­s.

Naval Criminal Investigat­ive Service is leading the inquiry.

San Diego police investigat­ing death of 12-year-old boy

SAN DIEGO

San Diego homicide detectives are investigat­ing the death of a 12-year-old boy in the Skyline neighborho­od, authoritie­s said Friday.

Police responded to a call of an injured person on Cahill Drive near Cadman Street shortly after 9:30 p.m. on Thursday.

Officers arrived to find San Diego Fire-Rescue units on the scene trying to revive the boy.

He was later pronounced dead at UC San Diego Medical Center.

No further informatio­n on the death was available.

Man arrested, accused of robbery attempt at Home Depot

EL CAJON

Police arrested a man Friday on suspicion of attempting to rob a Home Depot in El Cajon by brandishin­g a Taser at employees.

The 38-year-old man, who is believed homeless, was apprehende­d by authoritie­s around 10:30 a.m. in the store’s parking lot at 298 Fletcher Parkway, said El Cajon police Lt. Nick Sprecco.

Employees reported approachin­g the suspect when he tried to leave the store without paying, pushing a shopping cart carrying about $800 worth of items. When confronted, the suspect reportedly pulled out a Taser.

No one was hurt.
