One dead in apparent crash, vehicle fire on Interstate 805

SAN DIEGO

One person died Monday evening following an apparent crash and vehicle fire in the center of Interstate 805 near state Route 163, authorities said.

It happened about 5:20 p.m. in the center divide on the northbound side of the freeway, between the exits to Mesa College Drive/Kearny Villa Road and Balboa Avenue, according to the California Highway Patrol and Mónica Muñoz, a spokeswoman for the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.

One person died at the scene, Muñoz wrote in an email. There was no other immediate reports of injuries.

Muñoz said the call was reported as a vehicle fire, but she was unsure how many vehicles were involved, or if there was a crash before the fire.

A CHP log indicated that one 911 caller reported a Dodge Ram truck was fully engulfed in f lames, but another caller reported that it was a motorcycle that crashed and caught fire. That caller said the motorcycle’s rider was on the ground bleeding and injured.

Caltrans San Diego tweeted that the left lane of the freeway was closed in the area for several hours. It reopened just before 8 p.m.

Accidental fire in El Cajon condo causes $500K damage

EL CAJON

A fire accidentally sparked by a plumber caused about $500,000 in damage and displaced several families in El Cajon on Monday night, a fire official said.

The fire threatened at least 10 apartments, which were evacuated, and 10 apartments south of where the fire occurred were evacuated as a precaution, an official said.

The blaze was reported shortly after 7 p.m. at condominiums on Amistad Court near Gustavo Street. A plumber had been working on some pipes with a soldering torch when he accidentally ignited a fire. The fire spread to the attic and damaged four units in the building, said Sonny Saghera, a spokesman for Heartland Fire & Rescue.

Firefighters from Heartland and the San Miguel, Santee and El Cajon fire departments worked for about a half hour to knock down the blaze, he said.

Red Cross was called in to assist residents displaced by the fire. It was unclear how many people needed to find temporary housing.
