COMMUNITY COLLEGES OPEN SPRING ENROLLMENT FOR CAREER CLASSES
The San Diego/imperial Valley region’s community colleges and Continuing Education centers are ready for a new crop of students. Spring enrollment is open and Career Education programs, many of which prepare students in two years or less for competitive middle-skill jobs, are accepting new students at all campuses.
“It’s a new year, and now is the time to take steps toward a new career,” said Martha Garcia, superintendent and president of Imperial Valley College, in a statement. “Our colleges have hundreds of affordable programs that help prepare students for careers in booming fields, such as computer science, health science and cybersecurity.”
Middle-skills jobs, which require more education than a high school diploma but less than a four-year degree, are the fastestgrowing job category in San Diego and Imperial counties. Employment in these fields, which include jobs such as medical lab technician and web developer, earn well above the area’s median wage.
Community college Career Education
programs are an affordable path to a rewarding career. Credit courses cost $46 per credit, compared with an average of $594 per credit for a four-year college course. Also, at many of the colleges, first-time, full-time students can have fees waived for the first two years, and noncredit continuing education classes are free. Career Education programs can provide complete career training for as little as $3,000, and 71 percent of students are employed within a year of graduation.
