3 IN FAMILY DROWN IN SWIMMING POOL

-

Three members of a family vacationing in southern Spain drowned after becoming trapped in a swimming pool, prompting an investigation into a potential malfunction with a drainage mechanism that may have sucked them underwater, authorities said Wednesday.

The tragedy unfolded when a 9-year-old girl began having difficulties in the pool. When her father jumped in to rescue her, he became trapped, too. Another family member, a 16-year-old, then entered the water to help, but all three died, said Jorge Martín, a spokesman for the Civil Guard of Malaga province, where the accident happened.

The father and daughter were British citizens and the to the Syrian army and opposition activists.

The Syrian Response Coordination Group, a relief group active in northwest Syria, said 216,632 people have fled their homes, many of them with no specific place to go. Many have been heading toward the Turkish border for safety.

Erdogan discusses Libya in Tunisia visit

Turkey’s president has met with Tunisia’s president in a surprise visit to Tunis to discuss the conflict in neighboring Libya.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan told reporters Wednesday he and President teenager was American, authorities said. No further details were given about them, though five members of the family were said to have arrived in the town of Mijas on Saturday.

Police are treating the deaths as an accident, Martín said, though they are still trying to determine what happened.

Kais Saied discussed steps for a ceasefire in Libya and a return to political dialogue.

The fighting in Libya has threatened to plunge the North African country into violence rivaling the 2011 conflict that ousted and killed longtime dictator Moammar Gadhafi.

The Tunisia visit follows two agreements Erdogan struck with the Libyan government that controls the capital, Tripoli, and some of the country’s west. The maritime and military agreements were condemned by the rival Libyan government in the east and the forces loyal to commander Khalifa Hifter.
