Milliron next leader at NU; awards and more career news

- MOVERS + SHAKERS

Dr. Mark David Milliron has been appointed as the next president and CEO of National University, beginning Oct. 1.

Milliron is an award-winning leader, teacher, author, speaker and consultant who has served across the K-12, higher education, philanthropy, corporate, and nonprofit spectrum over the last three decades. He comes to NU from his role as senior vice president at Western Governors University and Executive Dean of its School of Education.

Most exciting thing about his new role: “National University has a rich history of and deep commitment to serving a diverse population of learners for over 50 years. Helping lead a team with the skill and will to innovate around helping striving students learn well and finish strong on vital higher education pathways feels like meaningful work worth doing.”

One thing he’s learned about himself in the past year: “I’m more committed than ever to the idea that education can change lives and that we can’t just go back to ’normal’ as the pandemic subsides. We need to see our students as whole human beings and make sure our learning models, support strategies, and pathways to professions meet their moment.”

One piece of career advice or encouragement for others: “Keep learning, whether formal or informal learning, about all kinds of things. Even though it can be difficult to make the time, there’s just something about learning that will open doors, clear out the clutter, and challenge you to rise. It’s like a special key that can help you unlock better health, better relationships and better career options.”
