Stephen Loomis
January 12, 1944 - August 17, 2022
SAN DIEGO — Legendary, long-range sport fisherman, Steve Loomis, passed away at home, surrounded by his family. He died of COPD and the long-term effects of Polio, which he had as a child. Steve was the oldest of 5 children born to Bruce and Jerry Loomis. In 1952, his family moved from Hartford, Conn. to La Jolla, Ca. During his youth, Steve spent every moment of his free time on the beaches of La Jolla with a fishing rod in one hand and a home-made pole spear in the other. After graduating from La Jolla High School, he spent the rest of his life doing what he loved best, working in the commercial and sport fishing industries, where he was well known for his sense of humor, which was often inappropriate. In 1975, Steve became a captain on the long range boat, Royal Polaris, and worked there until he was sidelined by health problems in 2006. He continued to work in the Royal Polaris office for many years. Frank Lopreste, good friend and owner of the Royal Polaris, remembered Steve as being “just an incredible fisherman. Right up to the last month of his life, long range captains were calling Steve for advice. He was a very humble man, who will be sorely missed by his many friends.”
Steve is survived by 4 siblings; Brooke, Chandler, Todd, and Jamie. He is also survived by his loving wife, Thea, and his children; Cris Loomis, Ashley Loomis, Jason Burwell (Annie), and granddaughters; Kaylee and Charlee.
Steve Loomis, was called “Westy” by his colleagues. His granddaughters knew him as “Granddad Cheese.”
A Celebration of Life is being planned for late fall of this year.
