Harlandale ISD seeking applications to replace trustee who resigned after arrest
“While recent events involving one of our board members have raised concerns, our dedication to our students remains steadfast.” Board president Ricardo Moreno
The Harlandale Independent School District board will take applications through Jan. 26 to replace a trustee who resigned this month after being arrested on an assault charge.
District 2 trustee Christine Carrillo submitted her resignation on Jan. 2 after being accused of assaulting her husband. The board unanimously voted last week to accept her resignation.
“While recent events involving one of our board members have raised concerns, our dedication to our students remains steadfast,” board president Ricardo Moreno said ahead of the vote.
The board will consider appointing a successor from among qualified voters who have lived in Harlandale ISD’S District 2 for at least six months and have no felony convictions.
Applications can be submitted in person at the district’s administrative building at 102 Genevieve Drive on weekdays from 8 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. or emailed to ricardo.hernandez@myhisd.net. A map of District 2’s boundaries and access to the online application form is available on the district’s website.
The board will review the applications at a special meeting on Jan. 31 and interview candidates on Feb. 1.
Harlandale ISD is a B-rated district that serves about 12,000 students on the South Side, according to Texas Education Agency data. In a recent Facebook post, the district said it was seeking “a passionate and committed individual” to represent the District 2 community.
Whoever is appointed will serve until the May 2025 election, and have the option of running for the position then.
An attorney for the district told the board last week that state law requires Carrillo to retain her position as a trustee until she is replaced. Carrillo was first elected in 2013 and was reelected in 2021 with 70% of the vote.
She was arrested on Christmas Eve after allegedly grabbing her husband by his shirt collar and striking him with an open hand during a fight, according to a police report. She was charged with assault causing bodily injury and released on bond.
