SAWS offering rebate to install flow sensor
We live in an era of water scarcity. That’s why the San Antonio Water System is pulling out all the stops to promote conservation.
With coupons and rebates, the utility is encouraging customers to trap rainwater, dismantle irrigation systems and replace lawns with droughttolerant native plants.
That’s not all: SAWS wants you to install a flow sensor, an electronic gadget that measures your household water use and alerts you to leaks in your plumbing.
In fact, SAWS will pay you to do it, if you meet the requirements for a rebate.
What’s so special about a flow sensor?
A traditional water meter tells you how much water you used in a month. A flow sensor captures detailed information about changes in pressure, flow in your pipes, helps you see what’s driving your water usage and how you can reduce it.
Once attached to the main water pipe in your house, the sensor builds a profile of your normal water usage. If it detects a significant change, it will send an alert to your smartphone.
Some systems will cut off water to your house, or let you do it remotely, so a burst pipe or leaking appliance doesn’t ruin your property while you’re away.
Where do I get one of these?
To qualify for a SAWS rebate, you have to buy one of three approved flow sensors.
What conditions are there?
You have to be a SAWS residential customer with an account in good standing. You need reliable Wifi in your home, since these are internetconnected devices. And you need a smartphone or tablet that can download the sensor vendor’s app, so you can receive notifications and alerts.
About that rebate — how much is it? $150. In cash?
It’s a credit applied to your SAWS bill.
How much of the cost will the rebate cover?
That depends on which sensor you buy and how many extras you tack on. The Sawsapproved models range from $389 to $579 apiece, based on what’s currently on offer on the vendors’ websites.
Can I install the sensor myself ?
All three of the Saws-approved sensors have to be installed by plumbers.
What’s the power source?
They plug into the wall, and some have backup batteries.
Do they come with warranties?
Yes, one or two years depending on the manufacturer.
Any surprises in the fine print?
SAWS won’t install your flow sensor, and it won’t provide technical support.
That’s the manufacturer’s job. And SAWS isn’t accountable for how the sensor performs or how long it lasts.
Also, there’s a limit of one rebate per SAWS residential account.
Anything else?
Remember that your monthly water bill will be based on your SAWS meter, not the flow sensor. Readings from the two sources won’t necessarily match.
I’ve read enough. How do I get started?
SAWS advises you to read carefully on the approved flow sensors.
Follow the links to the vendors’ websites to make sure you’re getting the device you want at a price you can afford.
Next, read the rebate agreement to make sure you qualify.
Then, buy your flow sensor and have it installed.
Do I need to submit a receipt?
No. SAWS will verify with the vendor that your flow sensor was installed and activated.
How long before my rebate arrives?
Six to eight weeks, according to SAWS.
What if I want to talk to a human being about all this?
