Adell’s homer lifts Angels past Twins

- WIRE REPORTS

MINNEAPOLIS — Jo Adell homered, Kenny Rosenberg outpitched Sonny Gray and the Los Angeles Angels beat the Minnesota Twins 1-0 on Saturday, a day after Minnesota clinched the AL Central title.

Rosenberg (2-2), a 28year-old lefthander making his fourth big league start and ninth appearance, allowed five hits and two walks in five innings with five strikeouts. Carlos Estévez, the Angels' fourth reliever, hit Kyle Farmer with a pitch starting the ninth, then got three straight outs for his 31st save in 35 chances.

Gray (8-8) allowed a fourth-inning homer to Adell on a first-pitch sinker, just the eighth home run off Gray this season. He gave up four hits in six innings and struck out eight, lowering his ERA from 2.84 to 2.80, second in the AL to the New York Yankees' Gerrit Cole at 2.75.

Gray likely will make one more regular-season start. He has pitched 180 innings, his most since throwing 208 in 2015.

Cubs keep pace in wild-card hunt

Cody Bellinger hit a tiebreaking sacrifice fly in the seventh inning, and the Chicago Cubs topped the Colorado Rockies 6-3 at home to improve their position in the NL wildcard standings.

Led by a solid performance from its bullpen, Chicago earned its second straight win after a stretch of seven losses in eight games. It moved within a half-game of Arizona for the second NL wild card and ensured it would hold onto sole possession of the third spot for at least another day.

Marlins’ ace out for the season

National League Cy Young Award winner Sandy Alcantara's recent rehab setback has ended his season and raised concern about his availability to pitch for the Miami Marlins next year.

The Marlins' ace experienced forearm tightness following his outing with Triple-A Jacksonville Thursday. Alcantara was rehabilitating from a forearm flexor strain that sent him to the injured list Sept. 6. He had hoped to rejoin the club as it contends for an NL wild card spot.

Rays’ Lowe out with leg fracture

The playoff-bound and injury-depleted Tampa Bay Rays put second baseman Brandon Lowe on the 10-day injured list with a fractured right patella on Saturday.

Lowe was hurt Thursday when he hit a foul ball off his leg.
