Carol Elizabeth McDonough, formerly Carol Elizabeth Dubis of San Antonio, Texas, age 84, peacefully passed away on September 2, 2022, after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer’s disease.

Carol was born on May 3, 1938, in Adams, Massachusetts and was the second child of Stanley and Amelia Dubis, both first-generation Americans of Polish descent. Carol was proud of her Polish heritage and loved her mother and grandmother’s pierogi’s and Golabki’s. Carol would often raise her glass of wine and be heard uttering the popular phrase, “Nostrovia” or “cheers” in Polish.

After graduating from Adams High School, in the shadows of Mount Greylock and the Berkshire Mountains, Carol made her way east and landed at Regis College in Weston, Massachusetts where she continued her studies and honed her incredible artistic and creative talents. It was during her studies at Regis that she met the love of her life, James (Jim) McDonough. Together, they explored the City of Boston, New England and the surrounding area, including Cape Cod. After a whirlwind romance, Carol and Jim were married on October 20, 1962 in a beautiful ceremony in the Berkshire Mountains of Western Massachusetts.

Carol and Jim initially settled in Marlborough, Massachusetts where they continued to enjoy all New England had to offer which of course included seafood, Regina’s Pizza, The Boston Symphony Orchestra, and of course, Boston sports. It was here that they raised their two children, James (Jamie) and Beth, and where she held a variety of careers, including elementary school art teacher and realtor. When she was informed of a pending transfer to Texas in 1978, Carol could be heard saying, “Not just no, but hell no!” Nonetheless, once convinced to make the transition, she soon embraced San Antonio, its people, history and culture.

Carol loved gardening, traveling, all animals (especially cats), and most of all, her family. She was a voracious reader who at any given time could be found curled up in her favorite chair with both a novel and a glass of red wine in her hand. She will be greatly missed.

Carol is survived by her husband of 60 years, Jim, of San Antonio, Texas, her son, James (Jamie) McDonough (AnnaLisa) of Durango, Colorado, and daughter, Beth McDonough Bonham (Warren) of Southlake, Texas. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Austen McDonough, Elizabeth McDonough Quinn (Christian), and Sam, Patrick, and Ian Bonham as well as her brother, Stanley Dubis, and her sister, Nancy Ford and several nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents, Stanley and Amelia Dubis.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the San Antonio Alzheimer’s Association, Alz.org/sanantonio.

A private celebration of life for family and close friends will be held at Sunset North Funeral Home.
