Genny Small

-

I am nominating my courageous wife Genny. She was diagnosed with stage 3 triple negative breast cancer in 2014 while pregnant with our 8th child when she was diagnosed. At 39 years old, with 7 other children ages 12 and under, she would face multiple rounds of chemo, 7 surgeries over the course of a year to fight a massive infection, hooked up to a wound vac and Picc line (all while educating her children at home). Through all that she fought, she decided to start a 501 c 3 non profit here in San Antonio, to help others find the resources she herself never had. Now, 8 years later, Overcomers Daughters of the King of Kings, has helped well over 400 women and their families. They hold bi annual retreats, bi annual 9 week survivorship workshops, bi monthly Thrive workshops for newly diagnosed survivors, quarterly workshops for spouses/caregivers that I teach with another gentlemen, and they offer quarterly financial grants through the Dove fund to survivors to help with their co pays and co insurance. She has the biggest heart and does all of this as a volunteer. Her and her team give selflessly to these women and families and I have personally seen her walk very tough roads with these women. I know am I missing a lot more but it is important to share that these resources are out there. Genny, Jessica and the team are there for their pink sisters from the beginning of diagnosis and even when it’s time for them to be called to Heaven. She has been at the bedside of her pink sisters as they have taken their last breath and really understands what the word “family” means. I want her to know that I see all that she does many times without others knowing or recognition, and all the hours she puts in just so others will be blessed. She works with excellence and gives so much. I see her, her children see her and we are just so proud of her for taking something that tried to kill her and turning it into a beautiful place for others to find hope. I love her and that she does for our family and her Overcomers family. She is my hero.
