A Troy man accused of shooting at a nurse while she drove home from work last month will be evaluated for competency, a judge has ruled.

At a hearing Tuesday, 52-3 District Judge Julie Nicholson ordered the evaluation for Cortez Ulysses Taylor, 29. Taylor faces nine charges in connection with the Dec. 9 incident in Rochester Hills, including assault with intent to murder, obstructing/resisting police, felonious assault of a peace officer, disarming a police officer and five weapons-related crimes.

The woman who Taylor allegedly shot at wasn’t injured, and she was able to get the license plate number of the vehicle he was driving, according to the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office. It’s believed the shooting was random.

Taylor “vigorously” fought with law enforcement as they attempted to take him into custody several hours after the shooting, injuring one of them, the sheriff’s office said. He was arrested after being tracked down by the sheriff’s search and rescue team while reportedly trying to get back to his home.

As reported by the sheriff’s office, the shooting happened just after midnight when the nurse, a 29-yearold Rochester resident, was heading home after leaving her shift at Corewell Hospital in Troy. She told police she was driving westbound on South Boulevard near John R Road when she saw a vehicle moving erratically and initially kept her distance, thinking the other driver was impaired. She then tried to pass him, honking her horn, and that’s when he rolled down his window and fired a single shot. The bullet hit the woman’s side mirror and then shattered her window, the sheriff’s office said.

Detectives recovered a 9mm handgun believed to be used in the shooting.

Taylor is scheduled to return to court March 1 for review of the competency evaluation.
