basketball teams will be playing to raise cancer awareness with a benefit game on Feb. 7 at Georgia Highlands College, 3175 Cedartown Highway, at 5:30 p.m. The benefit game is in honor of Holly Ford, wife of Dean of Natural Sciences and Physical Education Greg Ford, who is currently battling cancer. Benefit shirts can be ordered at all Georgia Highlands campus business offices. Proceeds from shirt and ticket sales will go to cancer research. Shirts must be ordered by today. Gathering fundraiser for local charities will be held at the Forum River Center on today from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Scheduled guests include Rome Braves manager Rocket Wheeler, hitting coach Bobby Moore, pitching coach Dan Meyer, new trainer Vic Scarpone, new Rome Braves General Manager Jim Bishop, Atlanta Braves Manager Brian Snitker, Atlanta Braves Assistant Director of Player Developmen­t Jonathan Schuerholz, Minor League Administra­tion Manager Ron Knight, Director of Scouting Brian Bridges and former Rome Braves player Braeden Schlehuber. Activities include allyou-can-eat food, a question-and-answer opportunit­y, an autograph session and a silent auction of sports memorabili­a. Tickets are $15 in advance, $20 at the door for adults; $10 in advance, $12 at the door for children; and $25 in advance, $30 at the door for VIP passes. Ryan to speak about changes in sports journalism on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. in the McAllister Auditorium, Berry College, 2277 Martha Berry Highway. The event is free and open to the public. During his career, Ryan spent 44 years working as a sports columnist for the Globe, covered 20 NBA finals, 20 Final Fours, nine World Series, five Super Bowls, the last seven Olympics, published 15 books and appeared on numerous radio and television talk shows.
