Horowitz is giving a Jewelry Nation hope once again

- BY CHARLES WHISNAND cwhisnand@portervillerecorder.com

I can hear John Facenda’s booming voice now: “The Jewelry Nation’s hopes and dreams seemed lost, but the old pro showed he’s not over the hill yet, renewing a Jewelry Nation’s belief that anything’s possible.”

And I can hear Sam Spence’s “Over The Hill Gang” playing in the background. As those of you know what I’m referring to you can tell I love those old NFL Films highlight shows. Spence wrote “Over the Hill Gang” in honor of George Allen’s Washington Redskins, who were thought to be too old, but made the playoffs every year.

David Horowitz of Horowitz Jewelry began making his comeback last week after struggling previously during the season.

Horowitz had the best record last week, going 7-3, and based on the history of Horowitz’s ability in picking games, last week should be more representative of how Horowitz will do from now on.

Horowitz is still in last place at 22-28 but now at least him and the Jewelry Nation have hope. J.R. Flores of J.R.’S Barbershop

remains in first place as he’s the only Prognosticator who’s above the “Whisnand Line” at 27-23. Mary Quijas of Juicy Burger Catering, Alex Larson of the Porterville Exchange Club and yours truly are all 23-27.

As Prognosticators Commissioner I still looked to make this week as difficult as ever for myself and my fellow Prognosticators.

There are plenty of interesting games this week, including The Red River Shootout between Oklahoma and Texas, which reminds of legendary Texas coach Darrell Royal who once told his team at halftime during a game against Oklahoma:

“There’s a heckuva fight going on out there boys, I just wished somebody would get involved.”

Royal also summed up one of the all-time great coaching philosophies in the simplest way when he said, “You dance with the one who brung ya.”

Anyway, here’s hoping all of us Prognosticators find more success as the season goes along. As always we ask you frequent the businesses of our Prognosticators whenever possible. And as always we wish you a blessed week.
